We have had 5 major portal losses in the past couple of years


Jacory Patterson and Miles Green to Florida - Top 10 program with a stronger sprints reputation than VT
Laurie Barton (800m) to Clemson - she was from there and decided to go back home
Lisa Gunnarsson (pole vault) to LSU - her Swedish national teammate was on the team there
Bashir Mosavel-Lo (800m) to Notre Dame - grad transfer. don't know why

We had a couple of other top guys sit out the season, and I don't know if it was injury, academic, COVID or transfer-related: Isaiah Wilkins (throws) and Joel Benitez (pole vault)

Seems like a mixed bag of reasons for the transfers. Some legit, some unclear. On the other hand, we have brought some good athletes to VT via the portal: Essence Henderson (throws) and Patrick Forrest (400m) are two that I can think of of the top of my head.
